Silk Boxers
"Silk boxers," I had said, spontaneously, when she asked if there was anything indulgent I'd like for my birthday. "I have a pair from a long time ago, and I like them, but I'm afraid to ever wear them because they're my only pair, so I feel like I should always save them for something special. If I had more than one pair, maybe I'd enjoy them more."
All conclusions aside about how neurotic my response probably sounded, she went birthday shopping, and after presenting me with a nice pair of pyjamas, she confessed, "I looked for silk boxers, but nobody seems to have them anymore. It's strange."
Not because I didn't trust her, but because I thought maybe the downtown stores would have a better selection than the suburban ones, I stopped by The Bay after work today to look around.
They have enough pairs of cotton boxer-briefs to clothe an army. They have enough sports-themed boxers to clothe the army's opposition. They even have a disturbingly large stock of men's thong briefs. Seriously. But the silk boxers were scarce and difficult to find, and even when I did find them I discovered that 1) about half of them were Playboy-themed, and 2) most of the ones which weren't Playboy-themed were not silk at all, but polyester, which must get awfully itchy if they get the least bit hot, I imagine.
Out of curiosity, I walked through the pyjama section as well, and there's not really much in terms of men's pyjamas — most of the fabrics were sort of low grade itchy cotton or linen, and a surprising proportion of them bore prints which seemed about 20 years too young. (I mean, honestly, how many adult men really need Spongebob Squarepants pyjamas?)
So I was left wondering, are silk boxers really a thing of the past? Is there a reason my one pair have sat in the closet for nearly a year? Am I hanging on to some kind of icky lecherous Hugh Hefner idea of male sophistication?
Whatever the reason, I can't say that the men's thongs are an acceptable alternative. . . .
